Ontario Auto Insurance is Changing

Jun 23 - 2026

In Ontario, the approach to auto insurance is changing: some benefits that were previously included automatically will now need to be selected separately.

✅ At the same time, basic accident coverage remains in place, including medical care, rehabilitation, and attendant care if you are injured.

⚠️ Other types of protection will no longer be included by default. These include: – income replacement if you are unable to work – support for students or those without income – caregiving and housekeeping assistance – coverage for education-related expenses – death and funeral benefits

💡 What does this mean for you?

You will now be able to choose the level of coverage that fits your needs. While this offers more flexibility, it also means it’s important to review your options carefully, as skipping additional benefits may leave you with limited protection.

💸 Choosing fewer optional benefits may slightly reduce your premium, but it can also lead to significant out-of-pocket costs in the event of an accident.

📝 If you already have a policy, it will remain unchanged unless you decide to adjust it. When purchasing or renewing insurance, it’s important to review what is included and what is not.
