When Roles Change, Don't Forget Each Other's Worth
Moving to a new country can change the familiar roles within a family.
The person who was once the main breadwinner may now be looking for work. The one who never expected to work may suddenly become financially responsible for the family. Children often learn the language more quickly and may find themselves helping their parents with everyday tasks.
These changes can bring feelings of confusion, loss of confidence, or even the sense that "I'm no longer the person I used to be."
But it's important to remember that our worth is not defined by our job, our income, or by who is currently contributing more to the family.
A person's value lies in their care, support, experience, willingness to be present, ability to listen, help, and love. Even if you can't do what you used to do right now, it doesn't mean you've become any less important to the people you love.
During the adjustment period, it's especially important to support one another by:
• expressing gratitude, even for small everyday acts; • recognizing not only the challenges but also each other's efforts; • avoiding comparisons about who has "adapted better" or "achieved more"; • reminding one another: "We're on the same team."
Sometimes simple words like "I see how hard you're trying" or "Thank you for being here with me" can provide the greatest comfort during times of change.
Adaptation is not a test of success. It is a shared journey where mutual respect, gratitude, and support help preserve what matters most—warm, loving relationships.
If you recognize yourself in these experiences or feel that the adjustment process is affecting your relationships, remember that you don't have to face it alone. You can book an individual or family counseling session here:
