The Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit
a federal payment for people and families with low or modest income.
Groceries

The Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit is a federal payment for people and families with low or modest income. It is meant to help with the cost of groceries and other everyday essentials. It builds on the existing GST Credit. There are two parts to this measure. First, there is a one-time extra payment expected in spring 2026, no later than June 2026. Second, starting in July 2026, the regular benefit amount will increase by 25% for five years.
Who may get it?
This benefit is intended for people and families with low or modest income. The one-time top-up is expected to go to people who were eligible for the GST Credit in January 2026.
Do I need to apply?
No separate application is needed. However, people should make sure to file their income tax returns. You should file 2024 tax return to be considered for the one-time top-up and must file 2025 tax return to receive the increased regular payments starting in July 2026.
When will it be paid?
The one-time extra payment is expected to be paid in spring 2026, no later than June 2026. After that, eligible people will continue receiving the higher regular payments beginning in July 2026. The government says the benefit will be paid quarterly, with payments issued in July, October, January, and April.
How much will I get?
The amount depends on family situation and income. The one-time extra payment is equal to a 50% top-up of the annual 2025–26 GST Credit amount. Starting in July 2026, the regular benefit amount will be increased by 25% for five years.
For example,
a single senior with $25,000 net income could receive a $267 one-time top-up plus a $136 increase to the regular benefit, for a total increase of $402 and a total annual benefit of $950.
a couple with two children and $40,000 net income could receive a $533 one-time top-up plus a $272 increase, for a total increase of $805 and a total annual benefit of $1,890.
This benefit is also in addition to other federal supports such as the Canada Child Benefit, Canada Disability Benefit, and Guaranteed Income Supplement.
