“Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change” is the theme of this year’s World Mental Health Day, observed on October 10.
This theme is especially important for immigrants and newcomers. Migration is not just about moving to a new country; it also involves change, uncertainty, losing familiar surroundings, separation from loved ones, and adapting to a new culture, language, and way of life.
Every migration story is unique. Sometimes, behind what appears to be a successful adjustment, there may be anxiety, loneliness, stress, or experiences that are difficult to talk about. That is why it is important to listen to people’s real stories, acknowledge their experiences, and create spaces where people can talk about their challenges without judgment.
If you or someone around you is experiencing an emotional crisis, having suicidal thoughts, or needs immediate support, you can contact Canada’s 9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Helpline free of charge and confidentially, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Call or text 988 at any time.
