Ukrainian Heritage Month and Mental Health

Sep 16 - 2026

September is Ukrainian Heritage Month in Canada. It is a time to recognize Ukrainian culture, history, traditions, and the contributions of Ukrainian Canadians to communities across the country.

After moving to a new country, many familiar things change. A new language, environment, work, daily routines, and social connections all require time and emotional resources to adjust.

During this period, familiar traditions can become an important source of support. The Ukrainian language, family recipes, music, celebrations, traditional arts, and connections with the Ukrainian community can help maintain a sense of connection to our past and our personal history.

Keeping cultural traditions does not mean stepping away from adaptation. We can discover a new country while continuing to value the things that have shaped who we are. Creating new traditions in Canada, sharing Ukrainian culture with our children, and participating in community events can help connect our past with our present and gradually create a sense of home in a new place.

Mental health care is not only about rest or professional support. It is also about connection to people, culture, values, and the things that give us a sense of belonging. Our roots can be more than a part of our history. They can also be a source of strength as we build our lives today.
